I don’t think anyone would disagree when I say that our busy lives have so many implications for our fashion choices. On the one hand, we have never been more connected globally than today. The fact that a writer like me in New York can publish a story about what people wear in Milan on the same day or find out about an emerging Latin owned brand and shout it out to the world is a beautiful thing. But on the other hand, we’re consuming and wearing new trends faster than ever before and it’s often at the expense of understanding the context that brought this fashion trend (aka the backstory) to life.
So today we take a closer look at the cultural history of several now famous fashion items – each of which has roots in Latin culture. This does not mean that the following nine pieces only are originally from Latin culture, but a significant part of their history stems from that, and that’s what we’re here to celebrate. We brought in Jeniffer Varela, a fashion writer with an MA in Fashion Studies from Parsons, to share her take on the backstory of several popular fashion items, some of which may already be in your area. cupboard.
Latin culture is of course vast and includes cultures that span 20 countries and several continents. Thus, the legacy of future fashion items like gaucho pants, satchels and boleros is just as nuanced and multifaceted as the cultures that gave them to us. With that, keep reading to uncover the stories of nine popular trends and see how fashion people are wearing them now.
