Chloë Sevigny redefines the maternity style

Chloë Sevigny and maternity style

Since last January, Chloë Sevigny has changed the way we think trendy maternity tunes to social media posts.

Face of the creative scene of the New York Downtown, the Chloë model and It girl became part of the fashion imagination during the 90s. Between one cameo and another in the videos of The Lemonheads and Sonic Youth, and before starring in the cult film by Larry Clark, Kids – Monelli (1995), the actress had appeared on the pages of the magazine Sassy, a sort of dream rite of passage for this Connecticut teenager who, alone, had learned to sew in her free time.

Even then we could see his experimental style – centered on vintage clothes – which would have defined his hipster look by the 2000s. The same goes for the red carpet. Without forgetting the Chanel dress haute couture of pink feathers that she wore at the Venice Film Festival in 2018, or the incomparable Mugler look with which she debuted at the Cannes Film Festival last year. Not to mention his appearances on the catwalk (for Opening Ceremony, Simone Rocha and Miu Miu) who have shown his various talents, both as a designer (in the case of OC) and as a muse.

Having said that, perhaps the maternity style is the chapter we love most about his manual fashion. Here’s how the actress – around New York (before the coronavirus emergency) – is rewriting the ‘expectant mother’ look.

A lesson on dressing in layers

Spotted walking the streets of the Big Apple with her partner last month, Chloë has shown us how easy and possible it is to adapt one of the most difficult stylistic solutions to the belly. Dressing in layers is certainly not easy when you have a baby bump. So let’s see how she approached this fashion trend. She started with an A-line shirt (by Chloé and technically it is a dress, a very useful garment also for the post-pregnancy wardrobe). Then he added a pair of black flared trousers, which perform a double function: they are comfortable and the ideal base from which to start every maternity look. The rest is typical of Chloë Sevigny’s style: a bomber jacket with a lived-in look, superimposed on a light denim jacket, which is barely visible, the Loewe Balloon bag and the inevitable black sunglasses.

The moment Simone Rocha

And here’s how to reuse a coat that gives great personality, and that does not necessarily come from the maternity fashion department (like this tartan trench coat by Simone Rocha, which we spotted on the actress for the first time in April 2019). Any advice for the wardrobe of all expectant mothers? Keep using your favorite rolling coats, just leave them unbuttoned. But let’s see in detail the Sevigny touch. Challenge the conventions of maternity clothing with boots cuissard very tight and an evening dress in jersey with ruffles worn as daywear.

Around the classic daily errands in his New York neighborhood, the American star showed off a 100% casual look with floral details, which are a guarantee evergreen. Protected in a warm coffee-colored coat combined with flared trousers with layered ruches and the inevitable moccasins, the actress added her personal touch in the form of a pin with a blue bow, which gives the look that attitude nonchalant from an unconventional 90s icon.

Chloë Sevigny has also been spotted in her hometown with an embroidered garment, unmistakably the work of Alessandro Michele, which is also, in our opinion, her best pre-maman look so far. It is a Gucci blue coat with precious embroidery, which comes directly from the catwalk of the autumn winter 2018-19 collection. The look of the practical trekking style boots (another Gucci classic) and the Loewe Balloon bag complete the look.
