It depends on the glance you wish to present to the world.

A simple everyday gesture can become very revealing.

Gucci creative director, Alessandro Michele, has imagined the new Gucci Mascara L’Obscur thinking about the endless opportunities for expression that makeup can offer. Here is the concept behind the new mascara in his words: I designed L’Obscur mascara for an authentic person who uses makeup to tell their story of freedom, in their way. We called it The Obscur because this word balances charm and mystery.

Thus, mascara is designed as an object of beauty and desire, which we can apply freely, in line with our personality, without following precise rules or standardized tutorials based around a specific individual’s face. The Gucci makeup’s revolution, which started with the new collections of lipsticks, is inspired by the belief that authentic beauty lies in imperfection, in those unique traits that characterize every individual. They are distinguishing features that cannot, and should not, be disguised or hidden away in the name of pre-established, made up, standards. Quoting Alessandro Michele: “Makeup is something poetic and fleeting that you can add to your face, changing or highlighting something about yourself. I find it an almost magical language, strongly linked to the other details I use for the expression of the self, such as jewelry and a hairstyle “.

Within this vision, there is room for eccentricity and for a type of self-expression that is free from prejudices and stereotypes. There is room for diversity, which is an integral aspect of the society in which we live, despite the fact that this is often not represented in the media. Taking it into account means having a conscious understanding of the complexities of the world. And it means, first of all, to welcome and accept our own. An attitude that could become a long-term undertaking and commitment as demonstrated by the initiatives launched by both Gucci and Vogue Italia for the promotion of inclusivity.

This was also highlighted in the spread shot by David PD Hyde, the talented photographer selected, alongside Catherine Servel, as a result of Instagram scouting project #theguccibeautyglitch, conceived as a partnership between Gucci Beauty and Photo Vogue Festival, the first conscious photography festival that explores the shared grounds between ethics and aesthetics. Based around the theme of “Unconventional Beauty”, the scouting project enjoyed extraordinary success with over 6000 photographs uploaded on the platform by photographers from around the world.

Born in China, David moved to Britain aged 13 and developed a passion for fashion photography in London, partly thanks to the influence of mentors like Nick Knight. The inspiration driving a new project can stem from anything; however, the art world and his personal background remain his primary sources. As for his creative process, intuition is often followed by a second phase consisting of readings and research.

In this series created in collaboration with Gucci Beauty and under Alessia Glaviano’s artistic direction, David sought to “push the boundary of beauty by having different types of beautiful faces and bring them together as one unity” in order to convey the concept that “beauty is everywhere and exists in every person”. As a photographer, his view on makeup is that it is a tool “that should always try to enhance beauty. Recently I used makeup almost as if artists using paints, to bring out the artistic elements or to enhance a message “. David strongly believes that fashion and photography can have a positive impact on society and foster change. “Since the medium exists, particularly in the twentieth century, photography has changed how we see the world”.
