About the project

Les Jesus’ patchwork quilting tells a visual story of borderlessness, genderlessness, and the fluidity and intersectionality of both the immigrant and queer experience. The dramatic silhouettes of Gabriel Brandon Hanson and Jesus Herrera’s huipil dresses come from the designers ’decade of experience crafting ballet costumes. Reflecting the duo’s own transnational background spanning suburban Mexico and rural midwestern United States, these pieces combine nostalgic vintage Americana prints with textiles from Mexico and Latin America from their personal archive.

The designers work closely with indigenous Mexican communities to create embroideries, broadening the representation of this artform in global fashion awareness. In this SS20 lookbook shot by Andres Navarro in Morelos, Mexico, co-designer Jesus models the collection he helped conceive and create, representing the intimate nature of the creation and life of these garments. The choice to quilt garments from vintage fabrics is a reaction to overconsumption in the industry; couture gowns are brought into natural settings to show how everything comes from and eventually goes back to nature, the ultimate designer.
