John Legend Shares Message to Chrissy Teigen After Pregnancy Loss

John Legend dedicated his Billboard Music Awards performance of “Never Break” to his wife Chrissy Teigen, just weeks after Teigen lost her third baby to pregnancy complications. On his Instagram last night, Legend expanded on his dedication, offering the family’s first remarks following Teigen’s announcement of their pregnancy loss and an intimate message to Teigen herself. He wrote:

It’s for Chrissy. I love and cherish you and our family so much. We have had the highest and the lowest together. Seeing you carrying our children has been so touching and humbling. I am in awe of the strength you have shown during your most difficult times. What a great gift to be able to bring life to the world. We have experienced the miracle, the power and the joy of this gift, and now we have deeply felt its inherent fragility.

I wrote this song because I have faith that as long as we walk this earth, we will hold hands through every tear, through every high and low, through every test. We pledged this to each other on our wedding day seven years ago, and every challenge we faced has made this promise more powerful, more resilient. Our love will remain. We will never break.

Thank you to everyone who sent us prayers and wishes, flowers, cards, words of comfort and empathy. We feel and appreciate your love and support more than you think. More than anything, we have heard so many stories of how so many other families have experienced this pain, often suffering in silence. It’s a club that no one wants to be a part of, but it’s heartwarming to know that we’re not alone. I’m sure Chrissy will have a lot more to say about this when she’s ready. But just know that we are grateful and sending love to all of you and your families.

Teigen and Legend announced the loss of their third child on Instagram at the end of September. Teigen wrote:

We’re shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before. We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite the bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough.

We never decide on the names of our babies until the last possible moment after birth, just before we leave the hospital. But we, for some reason, had started calling this little guy in my stomach Jack. So he will always be Jack for us. Jack has worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be forever.

To our Jack – I am so sorry that the first few moments of your life were accompanied by so many complications, that we could not give you the house you needed to survive. We will always love you.

Thank you to everyone who sends us positive energy, thoughts and prayers. We feel all your love and really appreciate you.

We are so thankful for the life we have, for our wonderful babies Luna and Miles, for all the amazing things we have been able to experience. But every day cannot be full of sun. In these darkest days, we will cry, we will cry. But we’ll hug and love each other harder and we’ll get through.
