Faced with the security measures of Covid-19, FASHION had to adopt a whole new method of image creation for our cover of the September issue with L’Oréal Paris. A traditional photoshoot reportedly saw L’Oréal Paris makeup artist and global makeup director Val Garland on location in Paris with cover star Cindy Bruna, but strict measures of rallying and social distancing meant her makeup had to be done virtually. So, while in the shelter of her London studio, Garland sketched out some stunning, avant-garde beauty looks that were then digitally applied to Bruna using L’Oréal’s Virtual Try-On app. Paris (click here to try the looks on yourself now!).
“I was inspired by what I thought would suit Cindy and how she would do it while working in harmony with the looks of fashion,” says the makeup icon. Below, Val Garland breaks down each of her makeup sketches and key L’Oréal Paris products to mark every look at home.
Totally addicted to the base
Before you begin, perfecting your foundation is a key first step. Try Infallible 24h Fresh Wear Foundation and True Match Eye Cream in a concealer (note: this hybrid formula not only conceals dark circles, but also contains 0.5% hyaluronic acid to hydrate the delicate eye area ) for an impeccable canvas. “I like to apply the products with my fingertips for a nice finish on the skin,” says Garland.
Red, she said
The inspiration: “It’s quite nice when there is only one strong detail. The moment you put on a signature flash of red, it immediately gives you confidence. It’s a look that will take you anywhere. ”
To get this lip look: For a statement lip, “I used the Brilliant Signature in 312 Be Powerful,” says Val, a bold, high-gloss lip polish that feels weightless. “To make the color really pop, start by filling in the lips with Color Riche Matte Lip Liner in In-Matte-Uated With You as a base before applying lip polish.” Bonus: Using this creamy matte lip liner to completely fill in your lips before coating them with your lipstick will keep your statement from moving and fading throughout the day.
To complete the look: “When I do this kind of makeup, the first thing I like to do is go straight in and do the eyebrows to frame the face.” Val said. Her go-to eyebrow enhancer to get the job done? Unbelieva’brow, a long-lasting tinted eyebrow gel. “Gently fill in the eyebrows while brushing the hairs, focusing on the areas where there are small gaps to make them look full and healthy.” A neutral eye shadow infused with waterproof oil was used to complete this look. “I applied Color Queen in Bravery 38 Oil Eye Shadow on the upper eyelid and blended it up towards the forehead and also down towards the lower lash line.
The inspiration: “I wanted to create a smoky eye that broke with the typical dark brown look. You want to keep it feline and fierce by pulling the color towards the temples. ”
To achieve this eyeshadow look: “It is above all about defining the color. If you want, you can start with a pencil to outline your shape first, then go through it by applying Color Queen Oil Eye Shadow in Keep-On 28 and blending it – but you don’t want to apply any shadow higher than the eye socket, ”says Val. “What makes this look feline and fierce is spreading the eye shadow along the lower lash line, pressing down on the shadow with an angled makeup brush.” She then circled Cindy’s eyes with Le Liner Signature in Noir Cashmere 735, a stain resistant twist pencil. “It will add definition and depth very close to the lash line.”
To complete the look: “Finish the look with lots and lots of Voluminous Million Lashes in Blackest Black,” says Val. Volumizing mascara works overtime to plump lashes. Follow up by taking the True Match Blush in Subtle Sable, a pressed powder that enhances the complexion, to shape the face – “even going a little into the hairline,” adds Val. “For the lips, because we have strong and lashes, I use Matte Signature in Rule 105 and just pat it on the lips with my finger.” Ultralight nude liquid lipstick is super thin and saturated with pigment, giving you a comfortable, long-wearing finish.

The inspiration: Negative space does not only apply to nail art. “We’ve all seen a cat eyeliner – the feline movie. This takes the liner to a much more innovative and modern level. ”
To achieve this eyeliner look: “The way to recreate this at home is to use the Fallible Flash Cat Eye. It has a fine felt tip, which will give you a super soft application and create the sharpest wings. The cover turns into a removable wing stencil that you can use to place your wing diagonally, ”Val shares. “Then you’re going to freehand draw a line along the orbit line. A cotton swab will be a good tool here, as you can just erase a section in the middle. ”
To complete the look: This is a light touch of mascara defining the lashes. “Putting a soft coat of Bambi Eye Mascara in Extra Black just on the lower lashes makes this look more editorial, modern and fresh,” says Val. “I want the focus to be all on the eyes, so I used bronzer on the cheeks, temples and hairline for a sun-kissed finish, and chose Brilliant Signature in Be Determined 301 on the lips.” One coat of this super comfortable lip ink and you are good to go. “It’s a beautiful beige lip that lets you focus directly on the eyes.”
