Inspired by the photo print sale fundraiser 100 PHOTOGRAPHERS FOR BERGAMO which recently raised 727,600 Euros for the Pope John XXIII Hospital in Bergamo, Italy, the New York photography community came together to help Elmhurst Hospital Center, in Queens, NY, which has dedicated over 95% of its operations to caring for COVID-19 patients.
Pictures For Elmhurst runs online at picturesforelmhurst.com from April 10–20, featuring prints priced at $ 150 from 96 New York-based photographers, including many of the top commercial and fine art photographers working there, such as Paul Graham, Sara Cwynar, Jack Pierson, Sam Rock, Oto Gillen, Mary Manning, Brianna Capozzi, Drew Jarrett, Katsu Naito and many others. The funds raised will be used by Elmhurst to purchase life-saving equipment.
Elmhurst is a safety-net hospital, serving mainly low-income patients, including many who lack primary care doctors. Queens accounts for 32 percent of New York City’s confirmed coronavirus cases, more than any other borough and far more than its share of the city’s population. It also has fewer hospitals. Elmhurst is one of three major hospitals serving a large population and is centrally located, which in part explains why it is busy in normal times and even busier now.
New York-based photographer Samantha Casolari, who initiated this project, describes its impetus: “The most difficult thing as this lockdown began was feeling powerless to help. I was stuck at home in New York City with a 21-month old baby, unable to go outside due to an invisible threat. I am originally from Italy, and took part in a beautiful fundraiser last week where Italian and international photographers donated work to raise funds for the intensive care units at a hospital in Bergamo overwhelmed by COVID-19.
The project was extremely successful, so I wanted to repeat it here for Elmhurst Hospital Center, which is at the center of the pandemic in New York City and in say need of support. In the days that followed, Jody Rogac, Vittoria Cerciello, Stefan Pictures For Elmhurst Dufgran and Matthew Booth joined the initiative to form ‘Pictures For Elmhurst.’ The support from the photo community has been overwhelming; it’s beautiful to witness such generosity and see first-hand how much New Yorkers want to give back to their city. “
All prints are available for a donation of $ 150 (plus $ 5 shipping within the U.S. or $ 15 internationally). An amount of $ 15 will be deducted from the donation for printing production. Griffin Editions has provided printing services and the Marsé Group has generously offered to process the funding and directly wire the hospital. As an entirely volunteer-based initiative, no profits will be made.
Due to the current closure of non-essential businesses, the prints will be made and shipped when the lab resumes its normal activity.
The prints are 8.5 x 11 inches with a variable printed area depending on the aspect ratio of the photograph. All are available in an open edition, limited to the duration of the fundraiser, and are unsigned.
