Plus, how he knew Meghan Markle was the right one.
Prince Harry made his late night American television debut.
The Duke of Sussex joined fellow Briton James Corden on The late show for a hilarious 17-minute segment that aired on February 25. During the interview, the host showed Harry relaxed around Los Angeles from the top of an open-air double-decker bus – the first time the royal rode in one. Corden – who attended Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle in 2018 – took the prince to see the house of The prince of Bel-Air (yes, Harry knows the theme song!) and even competed against him in an obstacle course. Naturally, the couple also enjoyed a cup of tea while touching on a range of topics from fatherhood to leaving the royal family. Here is everything we learned from their discussion.
Meghan Markle uses this nickname for Prince Harry
By visiting the Fresh prince house, Corden tries to convince Harry to make an offer to buy the house. (Because then he would be a prince living in the Fresh prince house, get it?) When that fails, the comedian grabs the Duke’s phone to call Meghan in an attempt to convince her that it would be a logical investment. The Duchess of Sussex laughs at the scheme and then gently reveals her very British nickname for Harry, asking, “Haz, how’s your tour of Los Angeles going?” Corden, of course, grabs the name and asks Harry when people started calling him “Haz”. Harry replies, laughing, “You are not my wife.”
Harry knew his relationship with Meghan was different almost immediately
Corden asked Harry how he knew Meghan was ‘the right one’, and the prince’s response was rather sweet. “[By] the second date I was starting to think it was pretty special, ”he says. “We were so comfortable in each other.” Harry went on to explain that it can be quite strange dating the royals – all of their initial dates were done privately at home, either for dinner, watching TV or just talking. “Everything was done back to front with us,” said the royal. “We spent a lot of time with the two of us, rather than going to friends or going to dinner. There was no distraction and it was great. It was an incredible thing. We went from zero to 60 in the first two months. “
Now the Sussex nights staring at a little different. The parents will give their son, Archie, his tea and a bath, and read to him before putting him to bed. Then they’ll cook dinner or order food and settle in for a night on the TV – Harry says they usually log on to Danger or sign in to Netflix.
Prince Harry has no problem with The crown
“[The Crown] does not claim to be news. It’s fictitious, ”Harry says, explaining that he has a bigger problem with inaccurate written tabloid stories masquerading as fact because they appear in the media. “But it’s loosely based on the truth. Of course, this is not strictly correct. It just gives a rough idea of that lifestyle, that pressure of putting duty and service before family and everything and what can come of it. I am much more comfortable with The crown that I see the stories written about my family, my wife or myself.
As for who Harry would like to see portray him in the hit Netflix drama? Country and Billion star Damian Lewis – although the royal is amusingly wrong at first and Corden has to correct him.
Harry loves being Archie’s father
The prince is talking about his first child – who will be two in May – with Meghan with a big smile on her face. “He’s hysterical and has the most incredible personality,” he says. He reveals that baby Archie even string together short phrases and sing songs. The proud dad also revealed his son’s first word: the crocodile.
The Queen sent Archie a Christmas present
“My grandmother asked us what Archie wanted for Christmas and Meg said a waffle iron,” Harry laughed. And the queen sent them one! “Archie loves it. He wakes up in the morning and just says “Waffle?” “
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip both know how to zoom
Harry revealed that they use Zoom to stay in touch with their family in the UK and that both of his grandparents know how to use the app. They even watch Archie run around their California home. But, like the rest of us, Prince Philip also doesn’t know how to elegantly end a Zoom call – Harry says he just shut the laptop in the middle of saying goodbye.
Harry stepped down from royal duties for his sanity
“He never walked away – it was a step backwards rather than resigning,” Harry says of his and Meghan’s decision not to be active members of the royal family. “It was a really tough environment, as I think a lot of people saw it. We all know what the British press can look like. It was destroying my sanity. I thought to myself: “This is so toxic”. So I did what any husband and father would do and I was like, “I have to get my family out of here.” As far as I’m concerned, whatever decisions are made on that side, I will never stray from it. I will always contribute. “
Harry isn’t quite sure what his and Meghan’s future will look like
Life in LA will surely be different for Harry and Meghan, Corden points out to the royal. But what exactly will it look like? “I have no idea,” Harry said. “It will be a slightly different version of what we continued to do in the UK anyway. My life will always be dedicated to public service, and Meghan signed up for it. We both love to do that, to try to bring compassion, to try to make people happy, to try to change the world in every little way we can.
