If there’s anything I’ve learned in the past seven months, it’s that I’m a creature of habit. My routines make me happy; I am more productive when I prepare; and I realized how important a little personal care is. I’m starting to realize that a lot of people are finding out the same thing about themselves. “Right now, it’s easy to let go of our favorite little rituals,” says Michaela Bushkin, my colleague and fashion editor at Who What Wear. “I barely did anything to my hair in my forties, and my mood took a hit,” she tells me. “But now I miss wearing my hair so much all the time.” She made it her mission to find a product that would give her a new ‘do without sacrificing the health of her strands.
So she contacted Lauren Eggertsen, a close friend and colleague, for advice. “I trust Lauren for just about everything from fashion trends I should try out to what I have to order out of restaurants. She has never let me down.” So she didn’t think twice when Lauren suggested investing in a product from hair health experts, Dyson. The Dyson Airwrap ™ styler – a tool that curls, waves, smooths and dries hair in one go without extreme heat – might be the perfect solution to uplift your mood and bring your hair back to life. If intelligent heat control and the Coanda Effect (an aerodynamic phenomenon that attracts and envelops hair using only air) can’t do it, nothing can. Did it work? Watch the IGTV above to find out, then just keep scrolling for a step-by-step guide on how Michaela made her hair look even more beautiful than after a trip to a salon.
Before you get started, it should be noted that the Dyson Airwrap comes with six styling accessories, which means that you can create any number of hairstyles with just one tool. Each set comes with a pair of 1.2 and 1.6 inch barrels, a firm smoothing brush, a soft smoothing brush, a volumizing brush and a pre-styling blow dryer. Now that it’s no longer the case, let’s see how to use it.
Start with wet hair and use the pre-styling blow dryer until your strands are 80% dry before setting the 1.2 inch barrel. Hair should be slightly damp before using any styling accessory as the Dyson Airwrap dries as it styles – the coolest feature.
Start on one side, using high heat and air, and make sure the arrows on the barrel aren’t pointing towards your face. Hold a piece of hair in the middle of the shaft, so that the tip of your hair can wrap around the barrel using only air – this is called the Coanda effect. Michaela wanted more relaxed loose waves so she used the 1.2 inch barrel style attachment here.
Before releasing the curl, it must be completely dry. Then set your style with the cold shot for five to 10 seconds and turn off the machine. Repeat until this half of your hair is done.
Once you’ve completed one side, switch to the other. Extinguish the barrels, so the arrows are pointing away from your face, and repeat the previous steps until this side is complete.
Spray hairspray and that’s it, my friends. Overall, this style takes Michaela 20 minutes, and like she says, the results are insane. “I admit that the tool is an investment, but I am more satisfied with the results than with the explosion of a salon. Unlike visiting a salon, I know exactly what I’m going to get and can achieve the same look without damage from extreme heat, so it’s really a win-win, ”says Michaela.
