Why Ariana Grande Skipped Billboard Music Awards in 2020

Ariana Grande made headlines earlier Wednesday when she revealed she was releasing a new album this month. But despite the imminent arrival of this new music, the singer chose not to attend the Billboard Music Awards tonight in person during his altered ceremony amid the coronavirus pandemic. Fewer celebrities in general physically attend, including those who are nominated, as the show does not have an audience. Grande won’t be performing tonight, which means she doesn’t really need to be there and can choose for her own safety to accept the prizes won from a distance.

Grande, for what it’s worth, is in the running for Top Female Artist, Top Social Artist (fan-voted category) and Top Billboard 200 Album (for Thanks, next). While the winners accepted their awards in person, Grande lost Top Female Artist and Best Album on the Billboard 200 to contestant Billie Eilish. It’s unclear if Top Social Artist will be announced on the show, but she is competing with fans of BTS, EXO, GOT7 and Billie Eilish.

Grande was part of the MTV VMAs in August, although she did not attend the New York ceremony in person. She posted her red carpet look from her California home, where she was quarantined. She wrote: “have a nice day VMA: 🙂 so excited to see our first performance rain on me tonight! @Ladygaga is fucking amazing and I’m so honored to share this moment with her and all of you 🤍 also just wanna tell her thank you at @MTV for being so diligent in making this experience such a safe and healthy one for all artists and team members involved. It is so appreciated and I can’t imagine how difficult it was to understand! see you so soon! 🌧 “
