Why Taylor Swift Skipped Billboard Music Awards in 2020

The Billboard Music Awards are the last awards show to have a modified show during the coronavirus, without an audience. Taylor Swift was among the handful of nominees not to attend the ceremony in person. Only the winners have accepted their prizes in person and not all categories have been announced.

Swift has been nominated for Top Artist, Billboard Chart Achievement Award, Top Female Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Song Sales Artist and Top Billboard 200 Album (Lover). Swift could have made history if she had won in multiple categories.

As Billboard said, if Swift had won the Top Artist title, it would have been a record – and her third victory. But Post Malone won the award.

If she won the Top Billboard 200 Album for Lover, it would be his third victory in this category, which would also set a record. But Billie Eilish won that award.

If she had won the Top Female Artist or Top Billboard 200 Artist award, it would be a record fourth time. But Eilish won the award for Best Female Artist, and the Billboard 200 Top Artist was not announced during the show. Lizzo took home the award for best artist in song sales and the Billboard Chart Achievement Award was not announced at the ceremony.

Swift recently made headlines for her very first endorsement of a presidential candidate last week. Swift backed Democratic candidate Joe Biden, explaining his choice to V magazine. She says:

The change we need most is to elect a president who recognizes that people of color deserve to feel safe and represented, that women deserve the right to choose what happens to their bodies, and that the LGBTQIA + community deserves to be recognized and included. Everyone deserves a government that takes the risks to global health seriously and puts the lives of its citizens first. The only way to start making things better is to choose leaders who are willing to face these problems and find ways to solve them.

I will proudly vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in this year’s presidential election. Under their leadership, I believe America has a chance to begin the healing process it desperately needs.
